Franchise GDP is projected to grow 5% in 2025, more than three times the Congressional Budget Office's 1.4% projection for the overall economy, driven by stronger employee retention, faster wage growth, and better benefits than comparable non-franchise businesses, and by the fact that 30% of current franchise owners say they would not own any business at all without the franchise model. The result is a business model expanding faster than the economy around it, built not on fast food but on local ownership across business services, home services, real estate, personal services, and retail, about 37 different industries in total. ### Most people hear the word "franchise" and picture a drive-through window. A new report from Oxford Economics, commissioned by the International Franchise Association Foundation, just put real numbers behind what franchising actually is in this country. I have read it twice now, and I keep coming back to the same thought: if more people saw this data before they made a career decision, a lot more of them would end up owning something instead of just working for someone. Quick-service restaurants, the image most people default to, make up only about a quarter of that total. The rest is business services, real estate, personal services, retail, and full-service dining, an enormous footprint hiding in plain sight behind brands most people never realize are franchises at all. Here is the part that stopped me cold. Franchise GDP is projected to grow 5% in 2025\. The Congressional Budget Office projects the overall U.S. economy will grow 1.4% over that same period. Franchising is not keeping pace with the economy. It is outrunning it by more than three to one. ### The Employer Nobody Expected There is a myth that franchise jobs are low-wage, high-turnover, corporate-extraction jobs. The data says otherwise, and it says so loudly. By the twelve-month mark, employees at non-franchise businesses are 49% more likely to have quit than employees at franchise businesses, controlling for industry, size, and location. Franchise employees also move from part-time to full-time faster, and they carry better coverage on paid sick leave, health insurance, and paid vacation than their non-franchise counterparts. The mechanism is not complicated. A franchise owner's income depends entirely on the performance of that single location. Losing a trained employee costs that owner directly, in a way it never costs a district manager collecting a salary regardless of turnover. Ownership changes behavior, and the data shows it changing behavior in the worker's favor. ### The Real Path to Ownership This is the number that matters most if you have ever thought about owning something of your own. Sixty-four percent of franchise owners were first-time business owners when they invested. Thirty percent said flatly that they would not own a business at all if the franchise model did not exist. Not a different business. No business. For a huge share of current owners, franchising is the entire reason they made the leap. It replaced the parts of business ownership that terrify people, building a brand from nothing, figuring out systems with no playbook, with something proven they could step into. ### Your Neighbor, Not a Distant Investor Eighty-five percent of franchisees live and work in the same community their business serves. They send their kids to the local schools. They buy 40% of their supplies from local vendors. They gave an estimated $2.3 billion to charity last year and sponsored 34 million volunteer hours. The royalty a franchisee pays is not wealth extraction flowing to some distant headquarters. It is the price of access to a system, a brand, and a network, paid by a local owner who then turns around and reinvests in the same town where they live. ### Why I'm Telling You This I did not write this to convince you that franchising is right for you.
