A Prison Called "I Can't"
You May Be Living In a Prison You Built Yourself
You May Be Living In a Prison You Built Yourself
I didn’t intend to remain incarcerated for so long, but Red, from the iconic movie Shawshank Redemption explains it quite well.
“These walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That's institutionalized.”
By the time I got to my late 20’s I was already looking back at my short adult life and realizing that I was not living the life I knew I was meant to live. I already regretted my education choices, my career choices, and hated the work I had to wake up and do every day while dream after dream died a painful death.
I did the same through my 30’s.
I did the same through my 40’s.
I knew I was supposed to be a business owner and make a big impact on the world around me. I had known it since my childhood. But every time that entrepreneurial spirit would attempt to rise up, another brick was laid in the walls of a prison called “I Can’t.”
By the time I reached my 50’s it was clear that the pain of remaining in this prison I had built was far greater than any pain I would face attempting a prison break. I began destroying the walls that had bound me with a righteous violence, determined to escape and live the life I was supposed to live, or die during the escape.
I am now a free man.

They know they are meant to be business owners. They understand that franchise ownership is the safest and most predictable way to become a business owner. But as I listen to them talk, it’s clear that they too are incarcerated in the prison of I Can’t, allowing self-doubt and limiting beliefs to prevent them from pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams.
These amazing people tell themselves, and me, the following stories, like the warden of their own prison, explaining why they’re doomed to a life sentence.
I don't have enough money to start a franchise.
The Truth: While starting a franchise may require some initial investment, it's important to recognize that there are various low-cost and affordable franchise opportunities available. Franchising offers the advantage of a proven business model, established brand recognition, and ongoing support from the franchisor, making it a more accessible option for aspiring entrepreneurs. Additionally, many franchisors offer financing options, incentives, and flexible payment plans to help franchisees get started without significant upfront capital.
I don't have the right skills or experience to run a franchise.
The Truth: Franchising provides a turnkey solution for aspiring entrepreneurs, offering comprehensive training, operational support, and guidance every step of the way. Whether you're a first-time business owner or a seasoned entrepreneur, franchising allows you to leverage the expertise and resources of the franchisor to overcome any skill or experience gaps. With access to training programs, manuals, and ongoing support from the franchisor and fellow franchisees, you can acquire the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as a franchise owner.
I'm afraid of failure as a franchisee.
The Truth: Fear of failure is a common concern among aspiring franchisees, but it's important to recognize that franchising offers a lower risk alternative to starting a business from scratch. With a proven business model, established brand reputation, and ongoing support from the franchisor, franchisees are better equipped to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and mitigate the risk of failure. Additionally, franchising provides access to a network of fellow franchisees who can offer guidance, support, and shared experiences to help you succeed.
I don't have enough time to run a franchise.
The Truth: Franchising offers the flexibility and scalability to accommodate your lifestyle and schedule. With established systems, processes, and support from the franchisor, franchisees can streamline operations, optimize efficiency, and delegate tasks to staff, allowing them to focus on high-impact activities and strategic growth initiatives. Whether you're looking to run your franchise full-time or as a semi-absentee owner, franchising offers the flexibility to tailor your involvement based on your preferences and priorities.
I'm not sure if the franchise idea will succeed in my market.
The Truth: One of the key advantages of franchising is the ability to leverage the success of a proven business model with a track record of profitability and success. Franchisors conduct thorough market research, site selection, and demographic analysis to identify viable markets and ensure the potential for success. Additionally, franchising provides access to a network of fellow franchisees who can share insights, best practices, and strategies for success in their respective markets. With the support and guidance of the franchisor and fellow franchisees, you can confidently pursue franchise ownership knowing that you're backed by a proven concept with a strong foundation for success.
Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of stepping outside of one's comfort zone. It's natural to feel apprehensive when considering a significant life change like starting a franchise, but allowing fear to dictate your decisions can prevent you from realizing your full potential. Recognizing that the feeling of "I can't" is often rooted in fear is the first step towards overcoming it.
So how do you conquer fear and cultivate a mindset of possibility and empowerment?
It starts with reframing your mindset and adopting a growth-oriented perspective. Instead of viewing challenges as insurmountable obstacles, see them as opportunities for growth and learning. Embrace uncertainty as a natural part of the entrepreneurial journey, and trust in your ability to adapt, innovate, and overcome obstacles along the way.
Another powerful antidote to fear is taking action. Action breeds confidence, and by taking small, incremental steps towards your goals, you can gradually build momentum and overcome self-doubt. Break down your goals into manageable tasks, set deadlines, and take consistent action towards achieving them. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small, and use each success as fuel to propel you forward.
Additionally, surround yourself with positivity and support. Seek out mentors, peers, and fellow franchisees who can offer guidance, encouragement, and perspective. Join networking groups, attend industry events, and participate in franchisee forums to connect with like-minded individuals who share your aspirations and can provide valuable insights and support.
Finally, practice self-care and self-compassion. Be kind to yourself, and recognize that setbacks and challenges are a natural part of the entrepreneurial journey. Practice gratitude, mindfulness, and resilience-building techniques to cultivate a positive mindset and maintain your emotional well-being throughout the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
The free version of you is the best, highest, most powerful, version of yourself, and this is the version you’re meant to live!
Remember, the only limits that exist are the ones you impose on yourself. So dare to believe in your dreams, silence the voice of doubt, and embrace the infinite possibilities that await you outside the prison walls and on the path to franchise ownership.
