I often tell our team members, colleagues, candidates, and anyone who listens that the work we do is changing the world.

But is it really?

Or is it just hyperbole to make us feel more important?

Here are some facts. You are not likely to turn on any cable or network news channel and hear about what Quantum Franchise Group is doing. The world is very likely to still be a place filled with a lot of pain and suffering ten years from now. A hundred years from now. It always has been and it always will be.

Within a generation, after my team and I have left this life and our company is no more, I’m 100% certain nobody will know what Quantum Franchise Group was, or what we did. I’m also pretty certain that historians, a century from now, will make no mention of us.

So how are we changing the world?

Craig has been a marketing executive for 22 years. His work is incredibly stressful, ever-evolving, and he’s expected to bring fresh new ideas and strategies to his firm, and his clients, on a regular basis. At work, in his community, and around friends and family members Craig is distant, withdrawn, with a short fuse. He returns home every evening completely depleted, nothing left to give to his wife and two teenage children, who feel alone and neglected. His kids are beginning to make questionable decisions to fill the empty spaces not filled by an emotionally present dad. And his wife is finding emotional and physical connections outside of the marriage. She’s worried about being fired from her job after an inappropriate relationship with a colleague went public.

Elyse is a single mom raising three kids all alone after her husband was killed by a drunk driver. The oldest, fourteen year old Simon, has taken on the role of parent to the other two kids, who are acting out in destructive ways, trying to cope with the loss of their father. Simon is failing his classes as he carries a weight no teenager was meant to carry. Prior to her husband’s death, Elyse had a dream of being an interior designer, but now spends her days as an executive assistant to a misogynistic boss and her evenings cleaning offices. She’s beginning to medicate with alcohol to numb the disappointment with life.

Roberto was born an entrepreneur. He was always the kid with the Kool-aid stand that looked more like a miniature convenience store. He didn’t have just one newspaper route, he had five, and he hired four friends to help him manage them, taking a cut of the profit from each of them. He had a shoe resale business in high school, buying sneakers online, then reselling them with a markup to his classmates. Roberto also grew up with parents who, on the daily, told him to get good grades, go to college, get a good job, and save for retirement. Starting a business was just too risky. Roberto goes through the motions every day, feeling empty and unfulfilled. He’s still single, alone, feeling like life is just one big disappointment while his dreams of entrepreneurship die.

And then there’s Alexander. He spent 12 years in the military with two very dangerous tours of duty and was honorably discharged. He has no idea what to do next. His wife works as a nurse to provide for the family while he bounces around from odd job to odd job. He’s great with his hands and loves to build stuff, but can’t figure out how to turn that love into a meaningful career.

These are all fictional people, with real world pain, and accurately represent the real people that we actually do work with to become business owners on a daily basis.

We are all interconnected and affected by everything, everyone, everywhere, across all of time.

I say, all the time, that the work we do changes lives, families, generations, and communities. And I firmly believe it.

When Craig is set free from his high-stress marketing job and opens his own business coaching practice the one he’s dreamed about for years, how do you think he will begin to show up and engage differently with his wife and children when he loves his work and feels like he’s making a real difference in the world? Will his marriage, and his wife’s reputation be saved? Will the trajectory of his kid’s lives be forever changed, allowing them to create lives for themselves and their own families that they love? How will that shape the futures of their own kids, grandkids, and so on?

When Elyse is shown how to actually fund and open her own home staging business, working with realtors all around the city who send her referrals on a daily basis, and is able to hire staging specialists and run the business from her home office, being present with her kids day in and day out, at all of the most important times, her entire family will begin to move in a very different direction. Simon will be able to reclaim his life as a teenager, focus on his education, and be in a much better position to choose his own path in life. The younger kids may be spared from unspeakable self-destruction.

Roberto could cross paths with us and have his entrepreneurial soul resuscitated. When he wasn’t working he was often at the gym and had a love for all things related to health, wellness, and fitness. How would his life change if someone could show him how to leave his job and open not just one, but a whole network of wellness studios in his metro area? With his heart, mind, and soul fully alive and aligned with what he was born to do, could he finally lean fully into life, fall in love, have a family, and a business empire to pass on to his kids?

Alexander experienced a lot through his military service. He learned how to lead people, manage projects, carry out missions, and deal with extreme risk and danger. If he were to cross paths with us, he could be shown how to open a design and construction business that creates beautiful living spaces for affluent homeowners, employs others, and generates well over a million dollars a year in revenue, with some of it given back to veteran related causes in his community. His wife and kids could begin to see him not just as a wounded warrior, but as a hero in his own community, and a husband and father who can give his family the best of everything.

The impact doesn’t end with family.

It’s easy to see how the families, and future generations of each of these people can be forever changed when they are set free to be and do what they were born to be and do. But like ripples on a lake, the effect reaches every shoreline.

It extends to the fast food worker who experiences kindness from each of these people, because they love their own lives and their happiness is infectious. Could that kindness cause them to view their own life, and potential future differently, or come at just the right time to cause them to rethink ending it?

It extends to the customers and clients who experience excellence with the products and services provided by the businesses each of these people begin.

It extends to the people who come to work for each of these people and get to be part of a company culture that everyone longs to be a part of, where team members are loved, valued, supported, celebrated, and given amazing opportunities.

It extends to the communities where each of these people live, that are now flourishing just a little bit more because of the presence of a new business.

It extends to every person who comes into contact with these people, their spouses, their kids, and eventually their grandkids, great grandkids, for generations to come, all of whom had the trajectory of their lives, and happiness, changed when they were shown how to live and work differently, fully aligned with the very best of themselves.

Think about it. Your life, right now, is what it is due in part to the experiences, dreams, and decisions of people from another time whom you’ve never met, and likely never even heard of. Your life is covered by the fingerprints of thousands of people across thousands of years.

"Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. And when he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" ~Clarence, It’s a Wonderful Life

So yes, we are, in fact, changing the world.

With every candidate we work with, with every franchise that is awarded, with every new business we help begin, we are changing the world one person, one family, one community at a time, for generations to come, in ways that we will never be able to fully imagine.

And this is why I wake up and do what I do, every single day. And I am grateful beyond words for the privilege to do so.
