I chanced upon this wisdom from Authority Brands’ Chief Development Officer, Jordan Wilson, in this month’s Franchise Times:

“The great thing about franchising is we give them the playbook, we give them the coaching, we give them the tech, we give them all those things I think they’re missing,” Wilson said. “As long as they have that entrepreneurial drive and the discipline, it’s a match that works.”

Wilson was speaking in a different context, but his words truly sum up the strength of the franchise path, especially for aspiring business owners who want to pivot into business ownership but may be held back by fear and intimidation.

The beauty is that solid franchise brands help set their franchisees up for success by providing:

  • A Proven Playbook: You don’t build a business from scratch; you get an established roadmap and operating system that has already been put into practice.
  • Comprehensive Training: You often don't need industry experience since the franchisor trains you on its business. This training can include sales, hiring, lead generation, financial management, inventory control, client retention, tech platforms, and day-to-day operations.
  • Established Financing Resources: While qualification-dependent, financing may be available through specialized franchise lenders, conventional lenders, SBA-backed loans, or financing relationships offered through the brand itself.
  • Marketing Support: Many brands provide marketing programs and strategies, creative assets, digital resources, and other tools so you don't have to develop these entirely on your own.
  • Collective Purchasing Power: Many franchises leverage the scale of their network for discounted pricing on equipment, inventory, supplies, and other operating needs.
  • An Ongoing Support System: Depending on the brand, support may exist for site selection, technology, hiring, sales strategy, operations, and other aspects of running the business.
  • A Defined Path to Scaling: You work with a repeatable template. Want to start with or grow beyond one territory or location? Look to brands that provide multi-unit or multi-territory expansion options.
  • Peer Community & Mentorship: You join a network of fellow franchisees to share experiences, best practices, ideas, and solutions to problems that others have already encountered.
  • It’s Not Just a Blank Sheet of Paper: No business is risk-free, including a franchise. But instead of inventing a concept, systems, processes, training, and operating model yourself, you start with an existing framework and support structure.

Yes, the idea of a business may still feel daunting, but it’s much easier to kick intimidation in the teeth when you don’t have to figure out the business of being in business all by yourself.
