Stacy gripped the steering wheel tightly as she drove away from her corporate campus for the last time.

She had given her notice to leave her high-paying marketing director role after 12 years. It was a risky move, but she knew in her heart it was the right one.

As a single mom to 9-year-old Marcus ever since her husband Doug's tragic passing, Stacy had grown exhausted by the constant grind of corporate life. The endless meetings, relentless travel, and late nights in the office were wearing her down. She felt like she was missing out on precious time with her only child during these fleeting years.

Stacy had been intrigued by the idea of entrepreneurship for a while, but could never figure out how to make it work with her family situation. That was until she attended the annual franchise expo in Dallas last spring. The exhibit hall was overwhelming, with dozens and dozens of franchisors waving, smiling, and handing out swag as she passed by. One booth caught her attention, the booth for a large franchise consulting firm, their banner stating that they represent over 800 brands across 37 industries. The team managing the booth explained how they can simplify the process, position her as a high-priority candidate, help with funding, and coach her through the entire due diligence process.

While talking to one of the consultants she learned that they represented a child’s hair salon concept. With a reasonable investment and the backing of an established brand plus operational support, this specific franchise felt achievable even for someone with no prior small business experience. Most importantly, the kid-friendly hours and concept would allow her to be present as a mom again while still achieving her entrepreneurial dreams.

Stacy moved decisively, cashing out savings and taking a home equity loan to fund her transition from corporate career woman to franchise owner. The first few months were a whirlwind - frantically locating and buildout out her retail space, hiring and training a team of young stylists, and finally launching the salon with a huge neighborhood grand opening party.

The challenges came fast and furious from day one. Managing cash flow and payroll was a weekly headache, especially in those early lean months before building a consistent clientele. One of her stylists abruptly quit without notice. A local mom went on a rampage on social media after claiming her son's haircut was uneven. Projection reports clashed with realized sales numbers.

But Stacy gritted her way through each obstacle pragmatically. She could take the bumps and bruises, because for the first time, she was truly in control of her own professional destiny. No more faceless corporate overlords or unreasonable demands. Just her running a small business she believed in, all while finally being there for Marcus when he needed her most.

In the evenings after closing, she would spend hours poring over the the company’s operating procedures and franchisor's recommended best practices. On her breaks, she walked the mall foodcourt rallying customers with free coupons and lollipops. She became a lunchtime fixture at the local elementary school, building her target customer base one mom at a time.

Slowly but surely, the hard work paid off. A year after launching, her salon was not just stable, but thriving. She had hired two more part-time stylists and was actually turning a profit, and had even begun thinking about opening a second location in a nearby town. More importantly, Stacy had reclaimed her time freedom and was present for her son.

As Stacy reflected on her risky transition paying off, she realized how simple the moral of her story was - bet on yourself. No more missed ballgames or mother-son milestones. She had stared down the risks of single-momtrepreneurship and emerged victorious. This was just the beginning of the legacy she would build for Marcus, all on her own hard-fought terms.
