QSRs in 2024: Adapting to Change and Driving Franchise Growth

Franchising's 2024 Economic Outlook; Part 3
Despite facing challenges such as inflation and labor shortages, QSRs are demonstrating remarkable resilience and adaptability, cementing their position as a cornerstone of the franchise landscape.
According to FRANdata's 2024 Franchising Economic Outlook, QSR franchise establishments are projected to grow by 2.2% in 2024, reaching an impressive total of more than 199,000 units. This growth is not just in establishments but also in employment and economic output. The sector is expected to employ nearly 4 million people and contribute a staggering $301 billion to the economy in 2024, marking a 4.7% increase from the previous year.

The answer lies in the sector's ability to adapt to changing consumer preferences and leverage technological innovations.
One key trend shaping the QSR landscape is the shift towards smaller footprint establishments. Rising real estate costs and changes in consumer behavior are pushing franchises to explore more compact store formats, including drive-thru-only locations. These smaller units not only reduce initial investment costs but also cater to the growing demand for convenience and quick service.
Technology is playing a crucial role in the evolution of QSRs. Franchises are increasingly adopting advanced technologies such as AI-powered ordering systems, license plate recognition in drive-thrus, and sophisticated data mining techniques. These innovations are enhancing operational efficiency, improving customer experience, and providing valuable insights into consumer preferences.
The rise of off-premises dining, accelerated by the pandemic, continues to be a significant trend. Ghost kitchens, mobile food trucks, and partnerships with third-party delivery services are allowing QSRs to expand their reach without the need for traditional brick-and-mortar locations. This shift is not only meeting consumer demand for convenience but also opening up new revenue streams for franchisees.

Labor issues continue to be a significant concern, with 91% of QSRs identifying it as a hurdle to growth in the IFA 2023 Annual Franchisee Survey. To address this, many franchises are turning to automation and AI to streamline operations and reduce labor dependencies. Additionally, some are exploring innovative compensation and benefit packages to attract and retain talent in a competitive job market.
Menu innovation is another area where QSRs are focusing their efforts. There's a growing trend towards healthier, plant-based options and international flavors, catering to evolving consumer tastes and a more diverse customer base. Some franchises are even exploring the potential of lab-grown meat alternatives, signaling a commitment to sustainability and innovation.
The economic environment in 2024 will present both challenges and opportunities for QSRs. While factors such as inflation and potential minimum wage increases (like California's move to $20/hour for QSR workers) may put pressure on profit margins, the sector's affordability compared to full-service restaurants could be an advantage if consumer spending tightens.
The combination of established brand recognition, relatively lower investment costs (especially with smaller format stores), and the sector's demonstrated resilience make it an appealing option in the franchise landscape.
As we near the end of 2024, the QSR sector's ability to innovate, adapt, and meet changing consumer needs will be key to its continued growth. From embracing new technologies to reimagining store formats and menu offerings, QSRs are showing that they're not just fast in serving food – they're also quick to evolve with the times.
