The Resilience of Franchising: Economic Outlook for 2024
Despite challenges such as inflation, labor shortages, and rising interest rates, franchising has not only survived but thrived, exceeding expectations in 2023. This year promises to be a transitional one for the industry, with both opportunities and challenges on the horizon.
In 2023, franchise establishments grew by an impressive 2.2%, surpassing the projected 1.9%. This growth trajectory is expected to continue in 2024, with FRANdata forecasting a 1.9% increase, bringing the total number of franchise establishments to a staggering 821,589 units. This expansion translates to over 15,000 new franchise locations across the United States, a testament to the enduring appeal of the franchise business model.
The industry is projected to add approximately 221,000 jobs in 2024, bringing the total franchise workforce to nearly 8.9 million. While this 2.6% growth rate is slightly lower than 2023's 2.9%, it still represents significant job creation in a potentially softening labor market.
Perhaps most impressively, total franchise output is forecast to increase by 4.1%, from $858.5 billion in 2023 to $893.9 billion in 2024. This growth in economic contribution underscores the vital role franchising plays in the overall U.S. economy.

Several factors come into play. Lower interest rates are expected to make franchising more affordable, potentially attracting new investors. Private equity firms are showing increased interest in the franchise sector, particularly in industries such as quick service restaurants (QSRs), personal services, and residential services.
The franchise industry will need to navigate challenges such as ongoing labor shortages, potential wage increases, and economic uncertainties surrounding the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Additionally, geopolitical tensions and global instability may impact businesses that rely on international supply chains or manufacturing.
Despite these challenges, certain industries within franchising are poised for higher growth.
Personal services and QSRs are expected to lead the pack, driven by changing consumer preferences and the enduring demand for convenience and experience-based services.
Geographically, the Southeast and Southwest regions are forecast to outpace the rest of the U.S. franchise market in 2024. States like Texas, Florida, and Georgia are expected to see particularly strong growth in franchise establishments.

From embracing new technologies like AI to addressing labor challenges creatively, franchise businesses that stay agile and responsive to changing market conditions will be best positioned for success.
As the economy transitions, franchising continues to offer opportunities for entrepreneurs, create jobs, and contribute significantly to the U.S. economy. It's an exciting time to be part of this dynamic and ever-evolving sector.
